Closing a data center is one of those projects that looks simple on a slide and gets complicated fast in the field. The servers are the easy part. The power infrastructure — UPS systems, switchgear, generators, transfer switches, and distribution — is the heavy, technical, and valuable part, and it is where most of the money and risk live. Here is a practical checklist for getting a data center decommissioning done cleanly, safely, and without leaving value on the floor.
Before you call anyone, write down what is actually in the room: every generator (make, kW, hours), UPS strings and their batteries, switchgear lineups, automatic transfer switches, panelboards, and breakers. That list is the single most important document in the whole project. It determines what the site is worth, who you should call, and how long removal will take. Do this while the equipment is still energized and labeled, not after a crew has started pulling things apart.
Here is the part most people get wrong: the majority of the power equipment in a typical enterprise or mid-market data center is recoverable, not scrap. It works fine. It is simply on the wrong side of a refresh cycle. Brand-name switchgear, late-model UPS units, and low-hour generators hold real resale value. Treating all of it as demolition debris is how owners end up paying to throw away equipment they could have sold.
Timing matters more than almost anything else. Once a demolition or ITAD contractor quotes you a price to “remove” the equipment, the recoverable value has usually already been priced out of your hands. Bring in an equipment buyer for a walkthrough first. A buyer who refurbishes and resells can often pay you for the lot and handle the removal, which flips a line item from a cost into a check. Data center power equipment is high-energy and unforgiving. De-energization, lockout/tagout, battery handling, and disconnection should follow your site’s safety program and be performed by an insured crew that does this regularly. Confirm certificates of insurance up front. This is not the place for a general labor crew learning on the job.
Generators and switchgear lineups are big, heavy, and awkward. Rigging, loading, and freight should be coordinated by the same team that disconnects the equipment, so nothing gets damaged in the move and nothing falls through the cracks between vendors. Using a single point of contact for disconnection through transport avoids the coordination gaps and downtime that come from stitching together a demolition crew, a rigger, and a hauler.
Close the project with a documented asset list of what left the building and where it went, and a broom-clean handover of the space. That paperwork protects you and makes the next phase of the building’s life easier, whether it is a sale, a lease, or a renovation.
A good data center decommissioning is not just demolition. Done right, the recovered value of the power equipment can offset a meaningful chunk of the project cost.
